00:01.031 --> 00:04.198
(marching band music)

00:08.840 --> 00:10.100
- Hello. Tom Frezza here

00:10.100 --> 00:11.870
from the Naval History
and Heritage Command,

00:11.870 --> 00:14.710
with another one of our
"Artifact Spotlights".

00:14.710 --> 00:17.580
This is where we take a look
at the timeline of the US Navy

00:17.580 --> 00:21.410
and pull out different artifacts
and teach you about them.

00:21.410 --> 00:25.233
And today we're going to
be focusing on the WAVES.

00:26.710 --> 00:28.640
So what does WAVES stand for?

00:28.640 --> 00:32.460
Women Accepted for Voluntary
Emergency Services.

00:32.460 --> 00:37.450
It was a program that was
started in 1942 by the US Navy,

00:37.450 --> 00:40.150
and the main purpose behind it

00:40.150 --> 00:42.580
was to release officers and men

00:42.580 --> 00:46.000
and replace them with women
in shore establishments.

00:46.000 --> 00:48.080
Most enlisted WAVES worked

00:48.080 --> 00:50.750
in jobs traditionally performed by women,

00:50.750 --> 00:55.630
such as clerical work,
healthcare and store-keeping.

00:55.630 --> 00:59.520
Also, they took over jobs
typically held by men

01:00.840 --> 01:05.840
in occupations like aviation
mechanics, parachute riggers,

01:06.610 --> 01:09.240
control tower operators, radio operators,

01:09.240 --> 01:11.720
yeomen and statisticians.

01:11.720 --> 01:15.640
And the WAVES uniform actually kind of has

01:15.640 --> 01:18.023
a cool back story by itself.

01:19.490 --> 01:22.889
At the time, the Assistant
Secretary of the Navy,

01:22.889 --> 01:27.889
James Forrestal, his wife was
a fashion editor for "Vogue".

01:28.900 --> 01:30.510
When they established the WAVES,

01:30.510 --> 01:35.320
she went up to New York to
Mainbocher's and asked them

01:35.320 --> 01:39.540
if they could design a
uniform free of charge.

01:39.540 --> 01:40.680
And they did.

01:40.680 --> 01:43.080
And the uniforms themselves,

01:43.080 --> 01:46.690
I've met and talked with many former WAVES

01:46.690 --> 01:47.950
from World War Two,

01:47.950 --> 01:51.320
and they talked about how
much they loved the uniform.

01:51.320 --> 01:54.420
It was practical, it functioned very well

01:54.420 --> 01:57.410
and it worked really well too.

01:57.410 --> 02:00.020
And the uniform that you see next to me

02:00.020 --> 02:03.420
is the regular enlisted
Blues, where you have

02:03.420 --> 02:06.993
the blue button-down shirt
underneath, the jacket,

02:08.166 --> 02:09.660
of course the chip tie,

02:09.660 --> 02:12.410
and the skirt, which does have pockets.

02:12.410 --> 02:16.270
And in the summer they had their Whites,

02:16.270 --> 02:21.130
or they also had a seersucker
work-dress and jacket

02:21.130 --> 02:23.220
that went over the top of the dress.

02:23.220 --> 02:25.080
It was very fashionable,

02:25.080 --> 02:26.350
and even the cover

02:26.350 --> 02:28.630
that you see the mannequin
next to me wearing

02:28.630 --> 02:32.170
was also considered very
fashionable at the time too.

02:32.170 --> 02:35.870
And the very top part,
which is white right now,

02:35.870 --> 02:39.070
is interchangeable with
all of the other uniforms

02:39.070 --> 02:41.890
that the WAVES were issued.

02:41.890 --> 02:45.660
So these uniforms were very popular

02:45.660 --> 02:47.913
with the women who served in the WAVES.

02:49.477 --> 02:52.190
All of the former WAVES talked
about how they loved it.

02:52.190 --> 02:54.060
And after the War,

02:54.060 --> 02:56.220
when they got out of the service,

02:56.220 --> 02:57.710
many of them got a book

02:59.090 --> 03:01.500
that explained how they
could turn their uniforms

03:01.500 --> 03:04.030
into regular civilian clothing.

03:04.030 --> 03:08.050
And a lot of them wore their
uniforms as civilian clothing

03:08.050 --> 03:10.673
because they enjoyed them so much.

03:11.650 --> 03:13.500
Now the WAVES were around until 1948,

03:14.460 --> 03:17.490
when the Women's Armed
Services Integration Act

03:17.490 --> 03:19.140
was passed by Congress.

03:19.140 --> 03:22.900
This meant that you didn't
need a specialized branch

03:22.900 --> 03:24.100
like the WAVES,

03:24.100 --> 03:28.610
women could just enlist
into the military and serve.

03:28.610 --> 03:32.050
And it took women serving in the WAVES,

03:32.050 --> 03:32.960
serving in the WAC,

03:32.960 --> 03:35.570
serving in the Yeoman
(F)s in World War One,

03:35.570 --> 03:37.230
that really opened the door

03:37.230 --> 03:40.720
for women serving in the military today.

03:40.720 --> 03:43.630
So all of the women serving
in the military today

03:43.630 --> 03:47.023
can thank the trailblazers like the WAVES.

03:48.050 --> 03:49.430
And with that,

03:49.430 --> 03:52.320
if you would like more information
please visit the website

03:52.320 --> 03:56.310
of the Naval History and Heritage
Command, history.navy.mil.

03:56.310 --> 03:59.891
And we'll see you at our
next "Artifact Spotlight".

03:59.891 --> 04:02.474
(mellow music)
