then Major Kettles and his crew 06:51.145 --> 06:54.145 on May 15th 1967, there are 44 names 06:55.198 --> 06:57.281 that are not on the wall. 06:58.097 --> 07:00.402 Just think about what that means. and graduations 07:08.647 --> 07:11.918 were made possible because Major Kettles and his crew 07:11.918 --> 07:16.001 returned again and again to the hot landing zone, 07:16.662 --> 07:18.412 Song Ja zone, 08:11.262 --> 08:14.382 fully aware now of what he would face, 08:14.382 --> 08:17.210 but we know he led six helicopters in 08:17.210 --> 08:19.377 exposed to withering fire, 08:20.041 --> 08:22.874 to exfiltrate the embattled force. 08:23.955 --> 08:26.822 Then we can only guess what went through Major Kettles mind 08:26.822 --> 08:30.989 as he made the defining decision to double back have known that as the only aircraft landing 08:43.316 --> 08:47.149 he would take all the fire, and he surely knew 08:47.691 --> 08:50.974 that without any air support, his odds of successfully shattering both front windshield and the chin bubble 09:09.497 --> 09:13.664 he still got into the air and back to safety once again. 09:14.850 --> 09:17.579 No we can't fully know what went through Super Stalliones, Cobras, 10:12.138 --> 10:16.305 Apaches and more, over Afghanistan, Iraq and elsewhere, 10:16.579 --> 10:18.447 many more would have been lost 10:18.447 --> 10:20.947 over the past Deerborn 14:11.318 --> 14:13.627 where he practiced on a flight simulator, 14:13.627 --> 14:15.218 to his work with cars and engines 14:15.218 --> 14:17.135 at his Ford dealership, 14:17.205 --> 14:20.678 we some of what prepared him to be an Army aviator. 14:20.678 --> 14:22.142 The Huey that Chuck flew was 14:22.142 --> 14:24.892 a pioneering machine at the time, 14:25.059 --> 14:27.924 but he knew instinctively how to get the most out of it. 14:27.924 --> 14:29.981 So while the deeds we honor today 14:29.981 --> 14:33.215 are the products of great courage and valor, 14:33.215 --> 14:35.282 they had there roots in what he learned 14:35.282 --> 14:36.897 growing up in Michigan. 14:36.897 --> 14:39.210 Chuck was highly skilled and well prepared 14:39.210 --> 14:40.422 to fly into danger. 14:40.422 --> 14:44.589 What he achieved on May 15th 1967 was not predestined. 14:45.249 --> 14:49.416 His heroic actions were the result of individual decisions 14:49.570 --> 14:51.629 he made on that day and every day he served 14:51.629 --> 14:53.212 as an Army officer. 14:53.565 --> 14:56.970 From the very day he volunteered to serve in Vietnam, 14:56.970 --> 14:59.918 ultimately it was because Chuck decided, 14:59.918 --> 15:02.668 not once, not two or three times, 15:03.283 --> 15:05.638 but on four separate occasions 15:05.638 --> 15:07.978 to fly directly into enemy fire 15:07.978 --> 15:10.645 that 44 American lives survived. 15:11.292 --> 15:14.044 Each time he knew it would be more dangerous, 15:14.044 --> 15:17.377 yet each time he made the same decision. 15:17.494 --> 15:20.500 Chuck had never met most of the soldiers he was rescuing. 15:20.500 --> 15:22.373 He had no idea about their backgrounds, 15:22.373 --> 15:26.540 their race, who they loved , or where they went to pray. 15:26.625 --> 15:29.936 All he knew was that they were his fellow soldiers. 15:29.936 --> 15:32.530 That they were his fellow Americans. 15:32.530 --> 15:35.448 At the back of his mind he must also have understood 15:35.448 --> 15:38.414 that for these young men to see their parents again 15:38.414 --> 15:40.322 to embrace their loved ones again, 15:40.322 --> 15:42.221 to serve their country again, 15:42.221 --> 15:45.138 it all depended on him and his crew 15:45.326 --> 15:48.332 and the decisions he would make that day. 15:48.332 --> 15:51.093 A couple of months ago Chuck went out to dinner, 15:51.093 --> 15:51.946 when a man approached him, 15:51.946 --> 15:53.685 he pointed to a table where 15:53.685 --> 15:55.873 his children and grandchildren, nieces and nephews, 15:55.873 --> 15:59.867 14 people in all had gathered and he said to Chuck, 15:59.867 --> 16:01.703 you see those folks over there 16:01.703 --> 16:03.370 it's all your fault. 16:03.947 --> 16:07.216 It was an extended family of one of the dozens of men 16:07.216 --> 16:09.693 Chuck and his crew had rescued. 16:09.693 --> 16:12.319 Over the past two days, the President, 16:12.319 --> 16:14.180 the Department of Defense, and the Army 16:14.180 --> 16:17.245 have celebrated Chuck's heroic actions, 16:17.245 --> 16:19.347 but we still have no way to appreciate them 16:19.347 --> 16:20.847 in their totality, 16:21.310 --> 16:22.797 because we have no way to calculate 16:22.797 --> 16:25.449 the contributions of Chuck rescued, 16:25.449 --> 16:27.018 of the families they raised, 16:27.018 --> 16:29.935 or all of the people they inspired. 16:30.261 --> 16:32.694 We do know however, that many of the soldiers 16:32.694 --> 16:36.073 Chuck stood alongside endured a painful homecoming. 16:36.073 --> 16:38.702 For some their service was little regarded. 16:38.702 --> 16:41.525 For others they were shunned by friends and loved ones 16:41.525 --> 16:42.692 because of it. 16:42.964 --> 16:45.517 Their experience should way on all of us, 16:45.517 --> 16:47.767 and must never be repeated. 16:47.992 --> 16:49.952 In the United States, we pride ourselves 16:49.952 --> 16:51.948 on the free exchange of ideas, 16:51.948 --> 16:55.967 and robust debate about our nations security is essential, 16:55.967 --> 16:58.878 but we must not conflate our views of war 17:08.391 the respect and dignity they deserve, 17:08.391 --> 17:12.558 and learning about this heroic soldier from Ypsilanti 17:12.726 --> 17:16.893 we've seen patience, humility, and duty redefined. 17:17.074 --> 17:19.423 In hearing the stories of many of his brothers, 17:19.423 --> 17:22.207 members of the team in which he was so devoted, 17:22.207 --> 17:25.624 we've seen what we value most as --> 17:51.660 he shared with generations of students in Michigan. 17:51.660 --> 17:53.948 To this day he visits local high schools, 17:53.948 --> 17:58.115 to answer questions about a war those students never knew. 17:58.580 --> 18:01.464 Lieuntenant Colonel Chuck Kettles was a consummate 18:01.464 --> 18:03.796 Army officer, but across his life 18:03.796 --> 18:06.840 he's also served as volunteered to fly 21:35.419 --> 21:38.419 UH1 Deltas popularly known as Hueys. 21:40.421 --> 21:44.588 In 1967 during the height of the United States commitment, 21:44.701 --> 21:48.868 Lieuntenant Colonel then Major Kettles deployed to Vietnam. 21:49.046 --> 21:52.987 These were difficult days for United States forces. 21:52.987 --> 21:54.904 The enemy was illusive. 21:54.921 --> 21:57.171 The jungle was unforgiving. 21:57.239 --> 22:00.621 Soldiers did not enjoy nearly the level of support 22:00.621 --> 22:04.788 from the American people that we take for granted today. 22:05.341 --> 22:09.424 Colonel Kettles began 15 May like so many others, 22:10.144 --> 22:12.311 leading a platoon of eight 22:13.187 --> 22:15.462 176 Assault Helicopter company Hueys, 22:15.462 --> 22:17.379 on an ground insertion. 22:18.306 --> 22:20.806 In this case with 160 troopers 22:21.639 --> 22:24.639 of the 1st Battalion 327th infantry, 22:25.224 --> 22:29.307 so they could find, fix, and destroy enemy forces 22:29.343 --> 22:30.676 west of Duc Pho. 22:31.922 --> 22:35.250 Once on the ground these men found themselves 22:35.250 --> 22:36.558 in the fight of their lives 22:36.558 --> 22:39.244 against a force estimated at battalion strength 22:39.244 --> 22:41.327 of North Vietnamese Army. 22:42.103 --> 22:44.339 The horror of the fighting that day 22:44.339 --> 22:48.506 most accounts the intensity of fire as unbelievable, 22:49.484 --> 22:53.097 is essential in understanding and fully appreciate 22:53.097 --> 22:56.345 the amount of magnitude of Charles gallantry. 22:56.345 --> 22:59.288 The NVA using a combination of automatic weapons, 22:59.288 --> 23:02.871 machine guns, mortars, and recoiless rifles 23:03.322 --> 23:06.748 hammered the bastion soldiers from fortified positions 23:06.748 --> 23:08.581 dug into the hillside. 23:09.312 --> 23:12.945 Pinning them down and causing numerous casualties. 23:12.945 --> 23:14.897 In the face of this grim situation, 23:14.897 --> 23:18.730 the soldiers only hope was rapid reinforcement 23:19.457 --> 23:21.335 from their aviation brothers. 23:21.335 --> 23:25.002 The mission to lead reinforcements into the engagement area 23:25.002 --> 23:29.002 and evacuate the wounded fell to Charles Kettles 23:29.027 --> 23:33.194 and his outfit who when notified did not hesitate. 23:34.735 --> 23:36.235 He did not 24:23.930 evacuate the wounded, and despite incurring casualties 24:23.930 --> 24:26.061 including one to his own gunner, 24:26.061 --> 24:28.978 he overcame seemingly inhuman odds, 24:29.269 --> 24:31.436 to accomplish the mission. 24:32.091 --> 24:34.725 Later in the day, when the ground force commander 24:34.725 --> 24:38.359 requested exfiltration of the remaining 44 troopers, 24:38.359 --> 24:42.109 Charles Kettles again selflessly volunteered, 24:43.011 --> 24:45.948 and put himself in harms way a third time 24:45.948 --> 24:49.365 despite having only one flyable UH1 Delta 24:50.401 --> 24:51.818 left in his unit. 24:52.070 --> 24:54.708 Though he knew full well the consequences 24:54.708 --> 24:58.875 he also knew more intensely the urgency of immediate action, 25:00.643 --> 25:04.810 and his own unique qualification to lead this extraction. 25:05.296 --> 25:08.733 Charles Kettles with five aircraft from a sister unit 25:08.733 --> 25:11.112 landed amid a hornets nest of heavy 25:11.112 --> 25:13.695 NVA small arms and mortar fire. 25:13.823 --> 25:15.269 Once the troops were loaded, 25:15.269 --> 25:18.430 the pilots departed but were soon notified 25:18.430 --> 25:22.206 that eight troopers were left on the landing zone. 25:22.206 --> 25:24.289 Charles did not hesitate. 25:25.030 --> 25:26.809 He immediately broke off, 25:26.809 --> 25:29.614 past flight lead to another aircraft, 25:29.614 --> 25:32.789 and returned for a forth landing to that LZ 25:32.789 --> 25:34.706 to bring everyone home. 25:35.547 --> 25:38.505 Duey Smith, one of those remaining on the ground 25:38.505 --> 25:41.291 described the situation and I quote 25:41.291 --> 25:43.645 "We all figured we were done for. 25:43.645 --> 25:47.812 When at the end of the valley we saw one lone helicopter 25:47.955 --> 25:50.455 headed our way." end of quote. 25:50.643 --> 25:53.976 Kettles once again vanquished his fears, 25:54.111 --> 25:57.528 bouncing several hundred feet to that LZ, 25:58.523 --> 26:00.704 and he loaded the remaining soldiers 26:00.704 --> 26:02.706 as mortars pounded and tracers flashed 26:02.706 --> 26:03.623 all around. 26:04.579 --> 26:06.806 The enemy concentrated all their firepower 26:06.806 --> 26:08.139 on Kettles Huey. 26:09.569 --> 26:10.941 Smoke billowed inside. 26:10.941 --> 26:13.718 The aircraft lurched from left to right. 26:13.718 --> 26:17.468 But somehow, some way, he was bale to fly it, 26:18.564 --> 26:22.147 coax it, will it, out of that landing zone. 26:23.446 --> 26:25.950 Lieutenant Colonel Kettles 29:45.193 --> 29:49.003 to carry reinforcements to the embattled force, 29:49.003 --> 29:51.836 and to evacuate wounded personnel. 29:52.229 --> 29:55.357 Enemy small arms, automatic weapons, and mortar fire 29:55.357 --> 29:57.816 racked the landing zone inflicting heavy damage 29:57.816 --> 29:59.006 to the helicopters, 29:59.006 --> 30:01.023 however Major Kettles refused to depart 30:01.023 --> 30:04.039 until all helicopters were loaded to capacity. 30:04.039 --> 30:06.453 He then returned to the battlefield 30:06.453 --> 30:08.836 with full knowledge of the intense enemy fire 30:08.836 --> 30:11.461 waiting his arrival to bring more reinforcements 30:11.461 --> 30:13.923 landing in the midst of enemy mortar 30:13.923 --> 30:15.403 and automatic weapon fire 30:15.403 --> 30:16.975 that seriously wounded his gunner 30:16.975 --> 30:19.747 and severely damaged his aircraft. 30:19.747 --> 30:21.611 Upon departing Major Kettles was advised 30:21.611 --> 30:22.904 by another helicopter crew 30:22.904 --> 30:25.729 that he had fuel streaming out of his aircraft. 30:25.729 --> 30:28.043 Despite the risk posed by the leaking fuel, 30:28.043 --> 30:31.223 he nursed the damaged aircraft back to base. 30:31.223 --> 30:34.042 Later that day the Infantry Battalion Commander 30:34.042 --> 30:36.612 requested immediate emergency extraction 30:36.612 --> 30:38.758 of the remaining 40 troops, 30:38.758 --> 30:40.967 including four members of Major Kettles unit, 30:40.967 --> 30:43.031 who were stranded when their helicopter was destroyed 30:43.031 --> 30:44.198 by enemy fire. 30:44.784 --> 30:47.597 With only one flyable UH1 helicopter remaining, 30:47.597 --> 30:50.039 Major Kettles volunteered to return to the deadly 30:50.039 --> 30:52.539 landing zone for a extraction Major Kettles was informed 31:01.804 --> 31:04.322 by the last helicopter that all personnel 31:04.322 --> 31:07.914 were onboard and departed the landing zone accordingly. 31:07.914 --> 31:10.157 Army gunships supported the evacuation 31:10.157 --> 31:12.074 also departed the area. 31:12.185 --> 31:14.156 Once airborne Major Kettles was advised 31:14.156 --> 31:15.969 that eight troops had been unable 31:15.969 --> 31:17.476 to reach the evacuation helicopters 31:17.476 --> 31:19.643 due to intense enemy fire. 31:19.990 --> 31:21.887 With complete disregard for his own safety 31:21.887 --> 31:24.887 Major Kettles passed the lead to another helicopter, 31:24.887 --> 31:26.905 and returned to the landing zone 31:26.905 --> 31:29.042 to rescue the remaining troops. 31:29.042
