WEBVTT

00:09.729 --> 00:16.630
Every 10 years, the 36th Civil Engineer Squadron, makes it their main priority that Andersen Air Force Base

00:16.836 --> 00:22.072
has clean and dependable fuel tanks that are always inspection ready.

00:23.543 --> 00:27.176
We have to coordinate with the bio-environmental flight we have to coordinate with wing safety and the fire department.

00:28.217 --> 00:36.994
So it takes a lot of coordination getting parts and equipment, making sure everything is operational, making sure everyone is on board for the day we actually come out here.

00:38.152 --> 00:41.528
Specially trained and equipped Airmen enter the underground tanks through a man hole

00:42.579 --> 00:50.793
They ascend and descend through the use of a safety harness and cables, once inside the tanks the airmen look for any signs of paint chipping or corrosion.

00:52.171 --> 00:59.145
and then begin to clean the tanks with pressure washers, there are a lot of hazards that come into play when you're cleaning a fuel storage tank

01:00.482 --> 01:07.482
there's explosive hazards, the fire department comes out here and they have a different eye for what they're looking for, what can be combustible or any thing like that.

01:08.617 --> 01:16.932
We have to make sure our equipment is either pneumatic or air operated or intrinsically safe, just stuff like that.

01:17.162 --> 01:25.031
all the harnesses get checked for shelf life, make sure they are serviceable, we do the supplied air, we have someone monitoring our levels at all times.

01:26.871 --> 01:32.235
There are a lot of dangers and hazards but we definitely mitigate most of them with the safety equipment that we have.

01:32.934 --> 01:36.977
The size of our tanks alone make us stand out among other bases in the Air Force.

01:37.681 --> 01:42.725
These fuel tanks not only supply the base, but they are also where we store fuel for transient aircraft.

01:43.485 --> 01:48.332
The continuous upkeep of these massive tanks is a task our airmen don't take lightly.

01:49.595 --> 02:00.301
Every 10 years is PACAF requirement and we're required to clean the inside of the tank because a contractor will come in and inspect all the welds and structure integrity of our fuel tanks here.

02:01.469 --> 02:06.113
And we have the biggest fuel system and storage in the Air Force, here at Andersen.

02:07.107 --> 02:13.751
Cleaning and maintaining these large tanks is a big task, but Team Andersen- Silva Engineer Squadron is always up to the challenge.

02:14.784 --> 02:19.126
Reporting from Andersen Air Force Base Guam, I'm Senior Airman Ameka Mmoh.
